How To Keep Your New Year’s Resolution (and any other one for that matter)

Posted by: scottstratten on Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Refuse to believe that life is only enjoyable on the weekend!

Remember to use M.A.C.E.!

Motivation – be sure it’s self-motivated, not external
Attainable – make sure it’s within reach. We’re talking days, not months
Controllable – you have to be able to control the goal. Weight loss is not a controllable goal, it’s a potential result of a healthier-living goal
Enjoyable – if you don’t enjoy the process, you wont reach your goal

Hi, Scott!!
You are amazing and always seeking JOY, not necessarily for yourself, but what you can share with others. I look forward to hearing from you all of the time. Thank you!!

Well, I eat right (my Dr. is pleased with me)& pretty healthy for almost 60 yo (on 01/17). I don’t exercise, but I am very active & burn a lot of calories off.
My issue: I have smoked for 40 yrs., I ENJOY smoking, have tried many times to quit (many yrs ago), & I do not want to go through the painful withdrawal process ever again. (even intelligently KNOWING I will be healthier).
So, I can get thro’ your M.&A., but the non-existent in quitting smoking bec. I become someone not me at all..unwired, terribly grumpy, can’t sleep, can’t think clearly. It is horrible and nothing near control.
And the E., forget it!! How can I ENJOY quitting something I already ENJOY? I really have tried all the gadgets to no avail, & I cannot be hypnotized (tried w/3 different people).
So….HELP!! How can I get to the C. & the E. with this??!!?? Guess I need some more of your ‘tough love’ as someone here put it!! Thanks!

I’v enjoyed all your motivation materiial, but this is the best. My P.T. says to eat healthy; when tempted to eat things you shouldn’t have remind yourself “I eat to live, not live to eat.” And, that some time thirst feels like hunger, so grab a big glass of water. If the hunger feeling doesn’t go, then endulge in a healthy, but enjoyable snack. It works….
Happy New Year

Penny Says:
January 5th, 2009 at 8:09 pm

Yes, I like your “One day at a time”, courage, conviction and baby steps will get you there. I have the opinion that we can control weight loss. We are the ones making the choices, we have to make the right ones. Make a plan and stick to it. Calories going in vs. calories going out. We are in control of that….and only us. Enjoy…..I like that plan, look after yourself when you earn it…treat yourself. Get through the hard times and the joy comes. Changing habits are the biggest challeges we meet.

Your “madness” behind the motivation will guide each of us to achieve that which we desire. Your coaching methods are “down to earth”, “real” and “simple” guides to be able to reach any goal. Laughter will lighten the load.
Good work.

Thank you Scott, this is great! The way you portray the process and steps, it would be hard NOT to give this a try! To be honest, I’ve never heard anyone relate M.A.C.E. to resolutions, goals, or even objectives – ever. I’m starting now.

Dave Says:

Happy New Year to you and yours. I appreciate everything you’ve shared here and I’m glad to see it getting out in the world. Today more than ever people need common sense and straight talk…with some laughs along the way. You are exactly what we need…thanks. ~Dave

PS To the person above with the smoking, there are so very new medical treatments that eliminate the withdrawl (check Web MD/Or google) BUT the most important part is the mental game. You really are going to need to think differently about smoking to quit. I’d suggest you look up Shad Helmstetter and learn some new “Self Talk” it’s very effective method for making changes in your life like this…it all comes down to what you are telling your self. (Best Wishes to you on your quest).

I like your M.A.C.E. as well as More Action Creates Energy – get off your backside and things will happen. An object at rest tends to remain at rest and nothing changes. MOVE! NOW! If for no other reason than to just MOVE and keep on moving. Don’t stop, because if you do, you’re doing it because you have achieved what you wanted. The secret is to never achieve your goal. Just get going and see where it takes you. I agree that there are so many people that are programmed for failure and need to get motivated – but don’t have any motivation! A tough first step.

Usually it is the pain of the now that motivates someone, so if you’re not at your pain point then there isn’t much motivation to change.

I liked reading about the lady that’s addicted to smoking – talk about the addiction doing all the talking and keeping her motivated to stay addicted. Cleansing is painful – and if you’re afraid of the temporary pain and discomfort then you’re bound to stay with the addiction until that pain gets too much – but you’ll likely be dead or hooked to an air bottle – it’s a little late then.

I enjoyed this and can testify that what you say is true. Last year I decided that NO MATTER WHAT I was going to keep my word to myself and keep twelve resolutions. DAILY resolutions. I would NOT go to bed unless I had done all twelve. And do you know what? I DID IT. And some of them? I hated a few of them more and more every stinkin’ month! LOL. But I kept my word to myself and got some super results.
This year I am carefully considering the resolutions I will stick to. Maybe FIVE days out of the week. Not seven. And the rewards sound super too. And having goals that mean something to ME … not to please others is key. Not motivated from fear of judgment or from “I should”.
For weight, I had three goals that supported my quest: Walk every day (min 10 min), drink 8 glasses of water, and post my weight DAILY on my blog. It ended up that I lost a pound a week for the first 7 months then tapered off. You are so right that it’s the daily things that help us get there. Commitment is key, though. If I hadn’t been willing to keep my word to myself, I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere.
Your on screen presence is super. Enjoyed this video and will share with my blogging public. All three of them. LOL.

Thanks for the video Scott and the entertaining delivery. I love the MACE idea. It is so simple and yet it makes so much sense. It is very easy to forget to enjoy the journey. It’s not about the destination because really the destination is dead. So have fun, do the right things for the right reasons and don’t set yourself up for failure.

Happy New Year!!

SO TRUE! So true! I have been antinewyearsresoutions for several years now. But, M.A.C.E. is something I can do. I’ve been talking about getting back into exercising for, well, 2 years. Just talking! In my head, I felt that to accomplish this I would need to join a gym in order to have the accountability to stick with it, and that I would reach such and such a goal with in a year, etc. Or I had to wait until I could afford a home gym monstrosity. That’s intimidating! And expensive and unenjoyable. For me.
After watching this video, I made a list of small things I CAN do to exercise. No goal in mind other than to do it, and the results will bring themselves. That’s M and A. None of them are expensive or require a personal trainer.
They require enough commitment to do them. They don’t demand I fork over this advance lump payment of commitment for the rest of the year!
That’s C.
E? Initially, no one enjoys exercise. But I’ll enjoy that I am doing it. That I’m doing what I said I could do. And as the results come, I will enjoy it further.
Thanks for making this video! Hilarious, and just what I needed for this coming year!!

Thanks also for the Attention Movie link. Did you know that Michael Phelps and Ty Pennington are also ADD overcomers? Pretty awesome.

Getting back to PatDaz:
Pat…your Motivation has to be so great you’re willing to take the rest of the steps. Doesn’t sound like you’re there…yet! I chose to get healthy Jan. 1st which included giving up alcohol – the nightly wine before, with and after dinner. Knowing that the alcohol interfers with my metabolism I couldn’t get the scale to budge and I gained at least 5 lbs. between Thanksgiving and Xmas. Actually, I learned that our body processes the alcohol first and the food converts to fat, unless we’re exercising so much that we burn all of it off (not my case!) I’ve lost 8 lbs., my fat pants are my fat pants again (they were fitting and I was scared) and my size 8’s are loose again! Yee-haw. I was craving wine for at least a week. My motivation was greater that the wine I enjoyed – the bad habit I created. I chose to control what I drank (swapped hot tea and iced water for wine) and ate (healthy choices – drastic changes here!). I love the results! I sleep better. I think better all day. I’m more alert. I have more energy. I’m not dehydrated. I have more money (wine isn’t cheap) to spend on other things! The list goes on.
When you decide it’s what you want for yourself Pat – you’ll do it. I quit smoking 25 years ago because I wanted to get pregnant and I wasn’t going to sabotage my unborn baby. That was my motivation. Once I had my baby in my arms, I wasn’t about to start smoking again – and subject him to those toxins.
To your best life!

Without a doubt it does reflect on my well-being. And you’re so right when it comes to 2009…just a digit change from 8 to 9. I am an avid walker (no automobile for me)and I spend much of my time with my dog, Cerberus walking as much as we can. My motivation of course is stay physically healthy in all my daily activities…taking one day at a time.
YOU are totally an inspiration to so many of the individuals that will respond to you. I loved your hat!

Yet another, well made video for self improvement. Informitive, helpful with a touch of humor… It was enjoyable, but I must tell you, I feel you let me and others down when I ask, Why have you stopped making Inspiring shorts. You remember the little movies that would show up in our email’s just at the right time. Scott will you ever bring them back?
