Emotional Currency – Where are you spending it?

As most of you know, I launched the TGIM Group Video Coaching Program: 6 Mondays

Here is the intro video to the first section “Emotional Currency”. You don’t get access to the main content of how to determine your daily balance etc… (that’s for members only!) but this video gives you a great insight into the concept.

(And what’s up with my head in the first freeze frame in the video?!?! Creepy…)

What do you think of the concept? Leave a comment below!

Good analogy of using an x amount of money for distributing emotions. We see so often people being their best in the public eye and when they are with their families they are at their worse.

I remember a college classmate that was older like I was who said she is happy when she is out but is crabby at home cause she is tired. I said I was the opposite, I was serious to get my job done and am a clown when I go home.

How “eye opening” your subject is ! Scott, you nailed down another of our “sabotage behavior”. Can’t wait to discover more on how to avoid this pitfalls. Thanking you in advance.

Hi Scott,
Yes I am definitely “out of cash” when I get home and have nothing left for the ones who matter most. I totally get the deficit from one day carries over to the next because I have shown up to work with near zero as well. This is perfect timing and thank you so very much for this unique opportunity!

Yes, so true. I’ve learned some of that on my own and I try to be very careful where I spend my emotional currency. I try to avoid “stress” at all costs. The fourth week sounds as though it will be especially interesting.

Zulema T. Salado Says:
November 25th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

If emotions are controlled, then how do we do so? I know I have days that I feel I have been run over by a truck and there is not much I can do to pick myself up. And there are people out there like yourself that stress we do not have to be a victim to our emotions. How is this possible? And what if I do have a chemical imbalance and refuse to take meds, am I doomed in this life as a victim of my own emtions forever?

Adonya Wong Says:

No wonder I’m always broke! I’ve been spendin’ in all the wrong places.

I shoulda be browsin’ the tools section, instead of stalkin’ the shoe department.

I’ve been so busy stompin’ (occasional horn honker & under-the-breath-swearer) that I forgot to stop and check out my account balance.

I’m the cause of this self-recession.

Thanks goodness for @idealway for tweeting about you.

I’m looking forward to learning more, and I can’t wait to get my hands on your book.

Thanks, Scott!

Bruce Says:

Hey Scott,

Great reminder. I work as a school chaplain, and know that every day I only have so much to give, and thus spending wisely means much to me.

I continue to be amazed at how flippantly people spend ‘their cash’ and then say it ‘wasn’t their fault’. It is so much in our control, and thus I spend much time with people trying to help them realise how much control they actually do have!
Cheers for TGIM

Scott, I wonder about your analogy of emotional currency as if it is like money. I understand your analogy as if emotions were a bank account. I consider my emotions as a candle, warm and bright. Sometimes people or situations might try to blow it out, but I stay flickering. I teach…so I have to have lots of light and warmth for my students, deserving or not. I come home in the evening with my flame of emotions for my wife, to give her warmth and light. I call this abundance!!! like in the “law of attraction.” Best wishes to all your viewers… A warm and light-filled Thanksgiving. Bernard

My Total was 33. Interesting because I have never thought of my well-being as Emotional Currency before. I was weakest in the Environment section. I feel fortunate in the work place because I really appreciate my co-workers and boss so other than the fact that I am working with clients all day which is tiring at times the only excuse I have for being tired whn I get home is that I am older. Also I have to admit my biggest fault in the home is that I am a procrastinator in getting rid of “stuff”. Thanks for bringing it to my attention so I can focus on what I need to do

I have had this over abundance since I am 15 years old. I sometimes drive people away because of my overflowing sharing of emotional bank account. Could someone effectively have to much in the bank? Do I have have a huge bank account because I never stop giving or maybe because I avoid negative people like the plague? Never the less I appreciate your teaching and can’t wait to build up my emotional bank account with all your fresh new ideas. I look forward to sharing your guidance with all who will listen. Hi Scott

I live in India and used to enjoy your motivational short movies and used to share this with some of my friends; I am 58 and get really inspired with your ability to produce such short movies;

I could see in your TGIM, a similar effort in the beginning itself; Emotional thoughts when positive brings abundance happiness and am the one who had witnessed the success of it in my life; a loving wife with 30 years of married life and 2 lovings son with a daugher in law; a lovely extended family of relatives and friends; It is not restricted to 0-100$ every day ; We get every day with plenty of emotional currency/thoughts deposited in our mind and if we spend it right with people around during the day it has a multiplier effect and the holding is limited only to the extend of your positive emotions;

I wish you all success in your attempts. May God Bless you.

Becky D. Says:
November 26th, 2008 at 10:05 am

Very enlightening!! I never realized what “emotional currency” was before now, but it really does make sense. How could I have missed knowing this was ME?! I think from now on, I’ll focus ALL my emotions on my family… that is, the good ones. And I’ll try not to think about other drivers, salespeople, etc. who seem to WANT to make me irate. Why waste emotions on people who aren’t worth it?! Excellent advice, Scott!!

Marisol Says:

Hi –
Emotional currency is a great tangible label to make us/me realize what is important. Sometimes it’s hard not to react in times of stress, but if you realize how temporary that moment is and how lasting giving your heart felt emotions to loved ones is, you’ll be the winner. Thanks!

Val Says:

Fantastic as always, I have spent so much that my credit is -. I gave my all at the office and held nothing for the home life. I saw how it affected the kids/husband, to give everything away I found I could not save for home or for retirement. I am changing and becoming financially responsible, but it takes work, we study for a career, so now study for your home life. Invest as much as you can into yourself, you know ‘pay yourself first’.
PS message for Zulema T. Salado response to your question; And what if I do have a chemical imbalance and refuse to take meds, am I doomed in this life as a victim of my own emtions forever?

Fantastic advice, especially the day before Thanksgiving when we’re stressed about things that don’t really matter like the food shopping, the long drive or flight to visit family, some of whom you don’t see eye to eye or get along with.As a trainer, this is a stressful time of year with clients whom I’m trying to motivate to make a change in their lives to choose to be healthy and positive. Some choose not to, and I have to remember to give my emotional best to people without losing my positive energy. I compare it to having a leech put on your arm-it can take your blood, or you can choose to remove it and go on to things and people that matter. Thanks again.

I don’t thing that those who avoid negative people are doing the right thing. It pays to be aware of the draining power of toxic situations and negative souls, but stop running and help them. I mean like one sentence every now and then, don’t dwell in their presence, it’s draining. They need help, and Scott’s help is not just for us, it is to be spread, to become infectious around the globe. This may seem small to some but it is large. Everyone does not understand life or life as pleasure, we are so burdened and focused on ourselves and things that cannot be changed and we will still keep butting our heads on the brick wall until someone say’s look over there, there is a daisy coming from between the pavement. Sure they may get angry and continue in their destrcutive b ehaviour but they may have stopped for that second to wonder why an idiot brought up a daisy. They may even think about it later, the daisy I mean, or the intervention. Hey, whatever, your intervention and giving someone pause is a start. From a Negative Nelly or Bitter Bunny to those on this site who shy away from me until my neck muscles hurt.

Pat Koontz Says:
November 30th, 2008 at 1:57 pm

Hi Scott,

Love your stuff, but I gotta disagree with you on this one. We are fully equipped with more than enough “emotion” to get us through the day & THEN some. It is when we waste our emotions on those negative people, places & things that we become drained & feel as though we have nothing left in our ‘account’ (i.e. our Hearts). When we begin our day on a high or positive note & manage to keep those positive thoughts & emotions flowing through the day – that is what we will get from others in return…many times over.
I believe that when we give Love to others – rather we think they deserve it or not – it can only create a positive energy that has a ‘ripple effect’ that comes back around to us, over & over again, thus keeping us abundant – if not Overflowing – in our “emotional currency”…

Just one opinion, but it’s the one that works for me.

Take Care, God Bless & Thank you

Isn’t it so true that we use up our precious emotions on people who don’t matter squat and then there’s nothing left for the people who matter the most. It’s something I work hard on with parents who often have a hard time being fully present with their kids. I love how you’ve illustrated the point with the “money”.

I play this video at least once a week. I had been spending so much emotional currency on people and things that really didn’t matter in my life. I spent a lot on a toxic friend that would leave my emotional tank on empty whenever we would
correspond. I have severed that relationship and can feel the benefits everyday. I find I have more emotion for my spouse and my family and my dear true friends. They raise me up.

Don’t you have to live and respond in the moment? For example. If a guy cuts you off on the road…do you just stuff that and unleash it at home? If a co-worker gets you angry…should you not resolve that and deal with that emotion with the person involved? It seems that emotions are spent because we live life…

Joel Thompson Says:

Emotional currency is a truly remarkable analogy for understanding emotions. We keep our tanks full by giving, the more we give, the more our tanks get filled up. I avoid energy vampires, they suck the emotions right out of me. Emotions are wonderful, they make us who we are. We should not be afraid to spend the currency. The key is making the currency last throughout the day. Great job of teaching and motivating, Scott!

Hi Scott

It’s amazing to hear what is on my mind each day. Yes, what u state is so much truer. We actually land up wasting each day on people or whom we either do not know or who did not require it n at the same time losing our energies unnecessarily which affects our own health very many times.

This one is a food for thought. I wud like to go thru the chart everyday which u hv mentioned in ur video n make use of the same.

Thank you anyway and may Allah bless you!
